Bo'ness Pottery

by Robert Jardine
  • Pottery industry of Bo'ness

Bo'ness played an important part in Scotland's pottery industry being one of the three major pottery producing towns in the country. Glasgow and Kirkcaldy were the other two.

The Bo'ness Pottery website is a result of years of collecting pots, photos, articles, newpaper reports, etc. and, finally, I have put everything together to give an illustrated account of the Pottery Industry of Bo'ness.

Pottery production in the town lasted for almost 200 years and it reached its heyday at the end of the 19th century when three factories were in production simultaneously at Bo'ness, Grangepans and Bridgeness. With the last pottery closing as recently as 1958, the industry is still fondly remembered by many Bo'nessians.

I hope you find the site of interest and if you have any comments or additional photos / information that you would like to share, please do not hesitate to get in touch using the E-mail link in the website.

Anyone shed any light on the bottle I have with Wm Innes West Lothian Aerated Works Home Brewed Ginger BO'NESS

Robert Jardine says

Freda, I have a similar bottle. These bottles are made of stoneware which is similar to pottery. Stoneware is fired at a higher temperature and as a result, is a much harder and robust material. Stoneware was made in Bo'ness but not in any great quantity. My Wm Innes bottle has the impressed mark of the Buchan Pottery in Portobello. I have another ginger beer bottle from the Kinglass Works which is impressed Grosvenor Glasgow (this was the Eagle Pottery). These two potteries specialised in stoneware. Like mine, your bottle was probably made at Portobello but if not, Glasgow is another possibility.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
