lamp post
I remember from my youth that a very special lamp post was positioned outside the Provost's house, and in due course this was moved to honour the next Provost elected. Is this still a feature of Bo'ness life?

As far as I know it is within the grounds of Bo'ness Academy
Thanks for the quick response, Catherine. But why is the lamp post in the grounds of the Academy, rather than outside the Provost's house?
I think Mr Sneddon gave it to the school
As I have not lived in Bo'ness for some years, and have lost touch with local dignitary identities, should I assume that the last Provost and I have a name in common? Is/was he/she connected in some way with Bo'ness Academy to warrant the present situation of the lamp post?
I think you'll find the provosts lampost is in front of the Municiple buildings in Falkirk along with several others from towns in the district
Hi I have to correct my last message saying that the provosts is outside the Municiple building in Falkirk it is as the others correctly said in the Academy grounds
Again, many thanks for these interesting comments relating to Very Special Lamp-posts. At the risk of sounding boring, I still wonder why the Academy is the Bo'ness lamp-post's present site. Anyone know?
It seems my provost lamp-post query has nowhere further to go! At least I know that currently it resides in the grounds of The Academy.
Now I'd like to raise another question: Does anyone know why the Muirhouses area of Bo'ness is known locally as The Murrays?
muirhouses is pronounced murrays. i read this somewhere but can't remember where
Thanks Rickie. So is it just about pronunciation? Seems strange an area would be named Muirhouses, then locally known as The Murrays. Any further ideas about the apparent name-change? By the way, why was it called Muirhouses in the first place?
noticed the query re Murrayes versus Muirhouses. I attach an extract from one of myresearched history books. This was written at the end of the 1800's.
Muirhouses
The former spelling of this name was Murrayes, about 200 years back and it is pronounced the sames as was, viz. as Murrayes at the present day, by the commonally, though written and pronounced as Muirhouses by all who make any pretensions to gentility. Having figured so far back as 1630 in public documents, Muirhouses, or Murrayes must lay claim to considerable antiquity and also to some importance......etc. "
To the west of the village was a loch and land possibly know as a Muir.

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
