Bo'ness – or Borrowstounness – is a former port and industrial town on the south of the River Forth, two miles north of Linlithgow and eight miles east of Falkirk. The area is steeped in history – the Antonine Wall reached the Forth just east of Bo'ness, and there is a Roman fort on the Kinneil Estate, where James Watt worked on his steam engine. Trade from Holland and France and industries including salt–panning, mining, and ship-building made Bo'ness a wealthy burgh. Today Bo'ness is a proud community of around 14,250 people and s1boness.com has been developed to allow residents share their news, views and opinions, make announcements, publicise events and show off their photos and videos.

13/5/2008Bo'ness help for Greenland kids

Craig Mathieson, who is setting off to Greenland in 2009.

Bo'ness explorer Craig Mattieson is ready to dodge polar bears and icebergs to take cool new laptops to Greenland schoolchildren.

And pupils at Deanburn Primary are getting involved to extend a warm hand of friendship to their remote Inuit contemporaries.

Craig, 39, is taking part in Northern Lights Greenland Expedition 2009 with two other adventurers. The three-week carbon-free trip will be made in kayaks, each loaded with 150kg of gear, covering just ten miles a day.

The Inuit schoolkids will be able to use the laptops to link up with friends at Deanburn and 250 other Scottish schools to study climate change.

The intrepid explorers need £20,000 to fund the expedition, which has Falcon Scott, grandson of famous explorer Sir Robert Falcon Scott, as patron, and the backing of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

You can help Craig make the link between Bo'ness and Greenland. To make a donation to his fund, or to become involved with the fundraising efforts, get in touch by sending an email to craigmathieson@blueyonder.co.uk, or by calling 07917122320.
