Community police awarded for saving Bo’ness knife victim
Community cops have been commended for their handling of a situation involving a man with a knife in Bo’ness.
Constables Laura Risk, Euan McLean, David Butterfield and Laura Moreland all received the Chief Constable’s Commendation at the Central Scotland Police annual awards.
They were among 60 people – police officers, police staff and members of the public – who were recognised for their efforts at the ceremony on Thursday, January 12.
The four officers attended an incident in Cadzow Avenue in August 2011, where a man was holding a large knife to another man in the street threatening to kill him.
The man refused to put the knife down and let go of the man, who was seriously injured and bleeding.
The officers used CS Spray which allowed them to restrain the man and help the other man to safety.
Chief Constable Derek Penman said: “The officers arrested this man who had carried out a violent assault on the other man in his own home.
“The man had fled for his life into the street and was attacked again with the knife.
“These officers saved the man from potentially fatal consequences.
“Their actions exemplified the primary functions of the police service of to preserve life, arrest offenders and to provide reassurance to the public.
“While there is no doubt that their training enabled the officers to perform in this manner, it is commendable that they remained calm and focussed in the face of danger and stress.”
He added: “It is important to acknowledge the jobs that people do, many of which are in difficult circumstances, mark their achievements and recognise the work and length of service that staff give to their force.”
