Live theatre shows coming to Bo'ness Hippodrome screen
31 JanuaryA new era is set to dawn at the Bo’ness Hippodrome, as the latest technology is installed in the oldest picture palace in the country - bringing live theatre performances to the screen.
Thanks to funding from Regional Screen Scotland the Hippodrome will soon be able to offer audiences the opportunity to view live performances from the National Theatre. With the installation of a special satellite dish, the Hippodrome will join the hundreds of cinemas around the world able to simultaneously screen broadcasts from the UK’s pre-eminent theatre company. So performances which up to now could only have been seen in London, can now be seen in your local independent cinema.
As a curtain raiser to the season of National Theatre Live broadcasts in February, the first play has an appropriate theme, given the venue’s unique place in cinema history.
In this, the Hippodrome’s centenary year, the play looks back to the very early days of cinema. Nicholas Wright’s new play Travelling Light is to be broadcast on Thursday 9 February at 7pm. It’s a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age and a haunting look at the stories we tell about our own lives.
This will be followed in March by the irrepressible Lenny Henry, continuing in his recently found career as a Shakespearean actor in A Comedy of Errors to be broadcast on Thursday 1 March, 7pm.
Come and join an event taking place simultaneously across the country as hundreds of cinemas simultaneously screen the National Theatre Live broadcasts to eager audiences. Tickets are £12 (£10 concession) and can be booked from the central box office at the Steeple, Falkirk on 01324 506850 or online via the website www.falkirkcommunitytrust.org – you can find a full listing of events at the Hippodrome here.
