Storm disruption continues for Bo’ness as chimney pot collapses

by Rebecca Garrett

Damage from this week’s 100mph winds continues to cause disruption after a chimney pot collapsed above the Bo’ness Toy Shop.

Given the nature of the overhanging debris and the loose chimney pot, the surrounding area at 19-21 South Street in has been fenced off.

Falkirk Council has been working with specialist contractors to make the area safe and to remove the dangerous rubble from the roof parapet, take down loose slates and remove the remaining stonework to the collapsed chimney.

The road will re-open once all cranes and debris has been removed.

In the meantime the traffic flow on Hope Street and Market Street will be reversed, keeping both one-way to allow local access.

Drivers are asked to take special care while these arrangements are in place.

Tuesday’s extreme weather also caused other disruptions in Bo’ness.

Refuse collection services were suspended due to the high winds and there has been extensive damage to council properties across the Falkirk area.

The Building Standards Unit has been responding to numerous reports of damaged and dangerous buildings, in order to inspect them and instruct works to make them as safe as possible.

Due to the volume of calls being received about storm damage, the council are currently only carrying out work to ensure public safety.

A council spokesperson said: “Our immediate focus was to ensure public safety and undertake temporary measures to protect the properties and ensure they remained habitable

“The focus now is on permanent repair and remedial work to the damaged properties.

“Given the number of properties affected, staff will be diverted from other areas of work to undertake these priority repairs.”

Meanwhile, country parks – such as Kinneil Estate - have also been affected.

The council has advised the public that there is a high risk of falling debris.

Make sure you check with the park before planning any visits - you can find Kinneil Estate’s contact details here.

Thankfully, the bin collection service has resumed however as the service is working a day in arrears this week (beginning Monday, January 2), collections intended for Monday will be carried out first, with Tuesday collections following on.

Brown bin collections are suspended to enable trade and domestic collections to be carried out.

Recycling centres are open as normal.
